The Salta Automotive Story:
From Project Car to Sole Ownership
Every independent auto repair shop claims to care about its customers, but at Salta Automotive, our foundation was built on an old-school handshake, late-night grit, and a shared obsession with mechanics.
A Late-Night Obsession with Rally Racing
Salta Automotive was originally opened in July of 2007 by three partners deeply embedded in the local rally racing scene. A few years later, Joseph Chiarelli, also known as Joe—a local fabricator, craftsman, and lifelong gearhead—was pushing through a difficult personal build: a 1983 VW GTI that simply refused to run.
Because the original team worked close by and specialized in the high-performance rally platforms he loved, Joe began biking over to their shop after his regular day job just to buy parts, bounce ideas off them, and ask technical questions.
The Clear Workbench & An Old-School Offer
Eventually, Joe conceded defeat to the wiring and mechanical complexities and had the GTI towed to their facility. The team diagnosed and revived the vehicle in short order.
Deeply grateful for their guidance and time, Joe tried to gift them a spare Volkswagen engine he had saved for a future project. The partners refused the motor. Instead, they gestured toward a clear, empty workbench in the corner of the garage.
They offered Joe full access to their commercial tools, shop space, and mechanical expertise on three strict conditions:
- Keep the bench immaculate.
- Return every tool exactly where it belonged.
- Never interrupt them when they are busy.
From Custom Fabrication to Sweat Equity
At the time, the partners were staying at the shop late almost every single night building a dedicated shop rally car. Joe was right there beside them night after night, finishing his GTI while learning the ins and outs of advanced automotive development.
During this era, Joe was also working alongside renowned public art sculptor Patrick Marold—a highly influential experience in precision, scale, and design (Patrick would later go on to officiate the wedding of Joe and his wife, Samantha). Joe then branched out into his own custom architectural design and fabrication firm, Gianuzzi Fabrication, building high-end custom furniture, cabinetry, and structural modifications.
Mastering Every Job in the Shop
Recognizing Joe's meticulous attention to detail, work ethic, and growing technical capability, the partners approached him with an offer to come on board in a "sweat equity" position. Joe accepted, working his way into equal ownership of the business.
Over the years, as the original partners transitioned into new ventures, Joe became the sole owner of Salta Automotive.
From his early days sweeping shop floors in Seattle during high school to handling customer service, service advising, facility maintenance, and high-level process design, Joe has personally held every single position in an auto shop.
“We don’t just read a generic trouble code and guess at parts. We identify mechanical solutions that hit a strict three-part criteria: it has to be undeniably good for the longevity of the car, financially practical for the customer, and sustainable for Salta Automotive to back with a warranty. If a repair path doesn’t satisfy all three, we keep looking.”
— Joe Chiarelli, Owner

Digital Vehicle Inspections
(DVI) via Smartphone
We believe that hidden fees and mysterious repairs have no place in automotive care. To bridge the gap between the service counter and the service bay, we pioneered comprehensive Digital Vehicle Inspections (DVI). When your car enters our bay, a detailed digital breakdown is sent directly to your smartphone.
This report includes crystal-clear, high-definition photographs and video clips of your vehicle's actual components. Whether it is a worn brake pad next to a measuring gauge or a leaking fluid line, you see exactly what we see. This process allows us to properly educate you on your vehicle's condition, giving you the clarity to make highly informed, pressure-free decisions on how to manage your maintenance budgets.
Denver Chamber & Local Community Commitment
As a long-standing active member of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Salta Automotive views auto repair as a vehicle for community investment. Joe’s objective is to build a business that serves as a benchmark for how independent companies treat both their neighborhoods and their staff. We prioritize providing strong, upwardly mobile career tracks, continuous technical education, and an empowering workplace environment for our team members, which in turn reflects directly in the premium level of care our clients receive.
Life Outside the Shop: Commitment to the Front Range
When Joe isn’t managing shop operations, fine-tuning diagnostic processes, or working alongside his service team, he focuses on absorbing everything the Colorado landscape has to offer. Joe and his wife, Samantha, prioritize traveling extensively, exploring diverse cultures and international perspectives across the globe.
As a lifelong gearhead, Joe has a deep history of building and racing competitive cars—though it is currently on a brief hiatus to balance life’s other creative pursuits. You can regularly find him mountain biking through Colorado’s trail systems, reading technical literature, keeping pace with advancements in technology and natural science, or winding down enjoying a great documentary series.
